Waterfalls & Wilderness – Accessible adventures

Secretly secluded in the hidden valleys of North East Tasmania are five of the most amazing and diverse waterfalls in Tasmania. You can see them all in a day, or better still, take your time to wander, explore and discover at a more leisurely pace.

Feel the seclusion and peacefulness as you mender the relatively unpopulated tracks and trails, catch your breath at the magnificent panoramas or marvel at the diversity of the ancient and majestic forests that hide these natural wonders.

Lilydale Falls is situated within Lilydale Park, just 20 minutes from Launceston. This lovely small fall is at the end of an enchanting easy 5-minute walk under the cover of ferns and eucalypt forest. Picnic area, playground and toilets are available at Lilydale Park.
Road B81 to Scottsdale via Lilydale goes right past the door.

Cuckoo Falls

Cuckoo Falls , near Scottsdale, is a spectacular sight and worthy reward for more hardy waterfall fanatic. Following an old highland cattle trail to the plains above, the steep two-hour return walk takes you through a variety of forest types. Dry eucalypt forest at the start of your walk, to magnificent rainforest clinging to the steep valley that hides Cuckoo Falls.
Off the A3 Tasman Highway south of Scottsdale at Tonganah.

Ralph Falls

Ralph Falls plummets down the fluted cliffs of Mt Victoria in the Mt Victoria Forest Reserve, south of the rural township of Ringarooma. As the longest single drop waterfall in Australia (cliff top to valley) it’s well worth the easy 20 minute return walk to ‘Norms Lookout’ at the top of the falls to see the single sliver of water plunge down the mountain. From the lookout, the panorama of the Ringarooma Valley opens before you with views to Bass Strait and the Furneaux Islands. Enjoy your wander under the Myrtle Rainforest canopy as you delight in the mosses and fern glades that thrive in this environment. EcoToilet, Barbeque and shelter are available at Ralph Falls.
Off road B423 south of Ringarooma OR off road C428 at Pyengana.

St Columba Falls

St Columba Falls are the tallest falls in Tasmania, a high volume multi tiered waterfall that throws itself 90m down the side of Mt Victoria. Much of the falls can be viewed from the road and the 20-minute easy return walk under the giant man and tree ferns is magnificent. Off road B423 south of Ringarooma or off road C428 from Pyengana.

Mathinna Falls is a four-tier waterfall, which cascades over a total drop of about 80m and is truly a spectacular waterfall. You’ll hear the water long before you see it at Mathinna Falls as an easy 30-minute return walk leads you to the base of the falls. The White Knights of Evercreech are just 16kms from here and it’s well worth a short detour to visit the largest White Gums in the world. From Ringarooma via the Mathinna Plains Road on the C423 or from Fingal on the B43.
